INTERCESSIONS FOR THE CHURCH YEAR
Advent, 1997 + Reign of Christ, 1998
These intercessions were composed by Karin Shrofel (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and
edited by Pr. Claudine Carlson (Mount Zion, Waterloo, Ontario).
These prayers are intended as expressions of our unity in faith and our solidarity in
service. They are designed to function as models for the local preparation of the
Prayers of the People in the Sunday liturgy. As such, they will need to be adapted to
local circumstance and need. For example, when the Brief Order for Confession is
omitted, an additional petition of confession might be included. As well,
contemporary concerns, together with local, regional and national issues, will need
to be addressed at the time of preparation. Those who craft the Prayers might
consult Crafting the Prayers, Section 9 in the ELCIC's GATHERED FOR WORSHIP
(1995) for helpful guidelines.
Intercession for the Church Year is produced under the direction of the
Working Group on Worship of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. The
artwork in (the printed version of) Intercessions is from Steve Erspamer's
CLIP ART FOR YEAR C [Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 1994].
Available in book form and on disk. Communities may freely duplicate Intercessions
for assisting and presiding ministers, worship planners and other ministers.

Planning Worship: Worship Planning Calendar (1997-1998)
On behalf of the Working Group on Worship, Pastor Wendell Grahlman (St. James,
Elmira, ON) has prepared a Worship Planning Calendar for the coming liturgical
year --beginning Advent, 1997. Enclosed in COMMUNIQUE, the Calendar lists the
name of the day, lessons, colour, etc., in a manner which will be helpful to presiding
and assisting ministers, altar guild members, acolytes and all others who plan or lead
worship in the ELCIC. The Calendar is based on the ELCIC's Gathered for
Worship (1995).
Leading Worship: Sunday Readings (Year C)
Look to Sunday Readings (Year C) for the complete texts of the ELCIC's Revised
Common Lectionary. This is the lectionary edition recommended for sanctuary use
in the ELCIC. It follows the liturgical calendar and texts set forth in the ELCIC's
Gathered for Worship. People have commented on how it has been helpful to have
such things as the full texts of the Passion Narrative for Palm Sunday and Good
Friday disposed for several voices. Note, too, that a supplement is available
containing the texts for the Lesser Festivals. Available in a loose-leaf, three-hole
punched format or on disk from Augsburg Fortress. See the publicity piece carried
in COMMUNIQUE.
Between the Sundays: Prayers for Mission
Some time ago, a number of ELCIC members requested some form of regular rota
of Prayer for Mission wherein, every day, people and ministries of the ELCIC
would be acknowledged in prayer. Pr. Doug Giles (Cold Lake, AB) has developed
such a ministry for the ELCIC. Portions of the rota are published a week at a time
on the elc-canada list server (see Communiqu‚ for subscription instructions) and
are made available to Church House in Winnipeg and to the synod offices via
e-mail. Synods are encouraged to republish via e-mail, fax or print. If you would
like to receive your own copy of Prayers for Mission, drop an e-mail note to Pr.
Doug Giles at . He'll put you on the list.
Evangelical Declaration: Litany
Many have inquired about the litany, based upon the Evangelical Declaration,
which was used at the closing service of the national convention. The litany has
been republished in the devotions contained on the 1997-1998 annual report covers
available from the ELCIC's Stewardship Department. Call 1(888)786-6707, ext
306, and speak to Judy Long to order.

in Christ God hears our prayers, we pray in Jesus' name and respond, "Amen."
A: Heavenly Father, unto us a child has been born, becoming both our life and our
hope. We praise you for this child, for the children in this congregation, and in our
lives. Grant us patience with children, and enable us to see the world through their
eyes, for Jesus taught that we must become as little children if we are to enter the
kingdom. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
A: Almighty God, you have promised the return of your Son, when the world will be
judged with justice and righteousness. Inspire our political leaders to strive for
justice and equality in our own time, that we, as a people, might reflect your will.
We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
A: Glorious God, we are called to sing to you a new song of rejoicing on this day.
Keep our hearts and minds open to new and inspired songs, prayers, and forms of
worship, that we might reflect your living, dynamic Spirit. We pray in Jesus' name.
Amen.

P or A: Today we tell the story of the birth of Christ--a story familiar, yet wondrous,
revealing the mystery of the Word made flesh. We pray in Jesus' name, and respond
"Amen."
A: Almighty God, let the members of your whole church be messengers to all the
nations, announcing peace and salvation, and bringing good news to all. Instill in us
sensitivity as we preach the gospel, and inspire us to live the example of Christ who,
though a King, chose to serve. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
A: O God of love and compassion, open the eyes and hearts of the nations to your

Jesus Christ, and for the holy scriptures which you have placed in our hands. In our

sadness in the slaughter of the holy innocents. Remind your church that its praise
and rejoicing at the birth of your Son must not stifle the cries of a world in pain, and
that even in this time of celebration, we are to care for those in need. We pray in
Jesus' name. Amen.
A: God of comfort, we pray that you would strengthen all organizations and
individuals devoted to protecting children who suffer poverty, abuse, and neglect.
May they act as Christ did in gathering children unto him, and may their work turn
our cries of lamentation into protective action. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
A: God of justice, provide refugees with safe passage to Canada. As the Holy
Family safely fled persecution and found sanctuary in Egypt, so inspire us as
Christians to be welcoming neighbours to refugees who enter into our midst. We
pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
A: Compassionate God, it can be difficult to be faithful in a world which often

Christ crucified, we will also share in the glory that is his. We pray in Jesus' name.
Amen.

draw ever closer to your example of love and grace. We pray in Jesus' name.
Amen.
A: God of justice, look with pity upon all those throughout the world who suffer the

A: O God, you have called us your own through the waters of baptism. You call us

according to our gifts. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Sunday, February 22, 1998

to share his love with others. We offer our praises and petitions to God, saying
"Lord, in your mercy", and responding, "Hear our prayer."
A: O God, source of life and healing, you have united those of every time and every
place into one body through baptism. You have transformed our human lives of sin
and death into godly lives of grace and salvation. We give you thanks for this most
wondrous gift. Lord, in your mercy. Hear...
A: God of glory, we live in a world that values material things and outward
appearances over the gifts of the Spirit and the eternal truth of your love. May we
not veil the gifts and truths that you have bestowed upon us, but instead walk boldly
in our faith, serving others, and professing your story. Lord, in your mercy. Hear...

SEASON OF LENT, 1998
Ash Wednesday
February 25, 1998
P or A: The words of Isaiah call us to enact justice as we proclaim the word of the
Lord against the oppression of our neighbours. On this day of repentance, gracious
God, we confess our many sins, and ask for courage to live justly. We pray in
Jesus' name, and respond, "Amen."
A: We are guilty of many transgressions toward you and our neighbours. We have
not loved you with our whole heart. We have treated our neighbours unjustly by
harbouring resentments and practicing discrimination. Accept this, our humble
sacrifice of repentance. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: Living in a nation of great wealth, it is easy to forget the hunger and want of our
brothers and sisters in poorer places, and even to ignore those neighbours among us
who are in need. Encourage us to share our wealth that we may help level the
inequalities of this world. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: As you call us to act justly and live lives of service, keep us humble in our
activities. Remind us that to sound a trumpet before our works is to receive only the
finite gift of human praise. Help us to work quietly, that we might enjoy heavenly
rewards. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: We lift up the names of the sick and the dying before you now: __________. Be
with them in their time of darkness. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
A: As we enter our Lenten journey, we remember the road of suffering traveled by
your Son. Light our paths as we reflect on the darkness in our lives, and encourage
us through scripture to live according to your will. May we receive your gift of
forgiveness with penitent and grateful hearts. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
P: We follow the path of Jesus, a dangerous road that we need not fear, for it surely
leads to new life. Amen.Lent 1
March 1, 1998
A: In our Lenten journey we reflect on our sin while walking toward new hope. We
need the strength of God's outstretched arm to guide us through this holy season,
and so we offer our concerns and petitions to God, praying in Jesus' name, and
responding, "Amen."
A: In the wilderness, our Lord was tempted by the devil to forsake the truth for a lie.
When we are so tempted, give us the strength of Jesus to answer the tempter with
bold faith in your truth. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: Hearing the story of Israel's entry into a land flowing with milk, honey, life, and
abundance, we think with sadness of the many threats to your creation that our
lifestyles have caused. Open our eyes to our guilt in the destruction of the
environment, and move our hearts and hands to work in this world with loving
stewardship. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: We pray for people displaced by war, famine, and persecution. Compassionate
God, be for these people a fortress and refuge, and encourage our peaceful nation to
extend good will to our distressed neighbours. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: We pray for the sick and the dying among us, especially __________ . Comfort
and support them in their time of darkness. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: We pray for this congregation, that we might learn to call upon your name, O
Lord, so that all our undertakings may be accomplished according to your will. In
Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
P: We lift up these prayers and the unspoken prayers of our hearts, trusting in your
compassion and relying on your strength to rescue us from our struggles. We pray
in Jesus' name. Amen.Lent 2
March 8, 1998
P or A: We pray with confidence to God through whom all things are made
possible. We pray in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and respond, "Amen."
A: We were numbered among the multitude of stars shown to Abraham, and blessed
by being living witnesses of your promise to create a heavenly family. Give us the
faith of your servant Abraham, so that we too may believe the unbelievable that you
promise, especially the promise of life from death. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: Help us to follow the message of your gospel. Strengthen us to resist settling
into comfortable patterns of living, and encourage us instead to reach out to the
world in ministries of healing, teaching, and serving. In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
A: For the sick and the dying we pray to you, compassionate God. We remember
especially __________ . In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

in your great love for them. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: Though your face may seem hidden from us at times, lost in the shadows of the
sin and greed of this world, enlighten our hearts and minds with a sense of your
presence, and lift our eyes to behold the bright stars in your sky. In Jesus' name we
pray. Amen.
P: In you, O Lord, as your faithful servant Abraham believed, all things are indeed
possible. We commend our prayers to you, trusting in your power to transform
fears into hope and sadness into joy. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Lent 3
March 15, 1998
P or A: We praise God's name, for he is gracious and merciful, and will not test us
beyond what we can bear. We commend our prayers to our merciful God, praying
in Jesus' name, and responding, "Amen."
A: We are instructed by your word to forsake wicked ways and to trust in your
mercy, for you are a God who will pardon abundantly. Draw your church to
repentance and freedom from the human greed and ambition which lead your people
to labour for that which does not satisfy. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: We reach out to the world by preaching your gospel and serving our brothers and
sisters. As we do so, strengthen our words and deeds with the gift of humility.
Encourage and direct us so that we do not in arrogance put your faithfulness to the
test. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: Help us to abandon notions of self-righteousness in relationships with family,
friends, and co-workers. Remind us that each human story is sacred, and that our
own stories are also coloured by the fallenness common to all humankind. In Jesus'
name we pray. Amen.
A: For all who suffer illness or face death, we pray to you, O God. Strengthen us to
lend our prayers and open arms to support and comfort them. We think especially
of __________ . In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: We pray for all those who lead in this congregation--pastor(s), assistants,
teachers, council members, and __________. Encourage them in the tasks of
service to which you have called them, that in all that they do your name may be
blessed. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
P: In our lives and prayer, let us seek the Lord that he may be found, giving us the
gift of eternal life. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Lent 4
March 22, 1998
P or A: The Lord invites us to his table, though we are sinners and unworthy of his
grace. In sincere humility, let us bring the concerns of our church and our lives to
his care. Praying in Jesus' name, we respond "Amen."
A: We, your church in Christ, are a new creation. Enable all Christians to be true
ambassadors for Christ, leading our communities with love, justice, and integrity
that may be a model for the communities of the world. In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
A: Your Son ate with sinners and outcasts, showing them the love that their brothers
and sisters had denied them. Inspire us to live as did your Son, by sharing our lives
and love with those who have known the disgrace of gossip, stigma, or cruelty. In
Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: We pray for the sick and the dying in our midst, especially __________ and all
those whom we name in our hearts. Deliver them from their suffering with your
comforting hand. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

lift the heavy weight of our sin when we call to you in repentance. As we pause in
silence, hear the penitent prayers of our hearts. (silence). In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen.
A: Like the prodigal son, we are welcomed back to your banqueting table as we
repent of our sinful ways. Encourage us to live lives that are pleasing to you. In
Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
P: With hopeful hearts we commend our prayers to your care as you have invited us
to do through your Son, Jesus Christ. We pray in his holy name. Amen.Lent 5
March 29, 1998
P or A: Mary, a faithful follower of Christ, gave richly of herself in anointing the
feet of Jesus out of love for him. Like Mary, inspire us to dedicate our lives to you.
May the prayers that we lift to the Lord reflect this sincere devotion, praying in
Jesus' name, and responding, "Amen."
A: You have washed away our old lives of sin in the waters of baptism. We praise
you, O God, for freeing us and making us new and holy in Christ Jesus. That we
may know and walk in baptismal grace each day of our lives, in Jesus' name we
pray. Amen.
A: Your Son taught us that the poor would always be with us to serve and assist.
May our church outreach and social programmes, community food banks, and
shelters heed the challenge of extending assistance and friendship to those in need of
hope. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: We pray for this congregation, that our relationships would be governed by love,
grace and forgiveness. Free us from our inclination to keep score of good deeds
done and wrongs committed. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: Comfort the sick and dying with your presence and peace. Especially do we
pray for __________. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
A: You have the power to transform all things old and dull into things new and

HOLY WEEK, 1998
Sunday of the Passion + Palm Sunday
April 5, 1998
P or A: Walking with Jesus into Jerusalem where the story of his passion unfolds,
we pray to God, saying "Hosanna to the Lord!" We respond, "Hosanna in the
highest!"
A: Almighty God, the story of Christ's passion fills us with wonder--a story in
which a triumphal entry is a march toward death and an executioner's cross is a
symbol of life. In humility we thank you for inviting us into this transforming story
through our baptism into Christ. Hosanna to the Lord! Hosanna...
A: God of all, you desire that every knee bend and every tongue confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord. Inspire us to proclaim faithfully the truth of Christ's death and
resurrection to those in need of the good news. May our proclamation arise from
lives devoted to serving others, as Christ was the servant of all. Hosanna to the
Lord! Hosanna...
A: God of the suffering, in scripture we see your mercy for the sick and dying. Be
with those who suffer in our midst, especially ___________ . Hosanna to the Lord!
Hosanna...
A: God of love, as we enter Holy Week and its many opportunities for worship,
keep our hearts focused upon you in the business and haste of our lives. Ever
remind us that this day and all days are made by you, our Lord, and not by human
activities and desires. Hosanna to the Lord! Hosanna...
P: Let your face shine upon your servants as we go from this place into the world,
proclaiming your gospel of love. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Maundy Thursday
April 9, 1998
P or A: Today we celebrate the new covenant that was made for us as children of
God through the Passover meal of Jesus with his disciples. Anticipating the full
realization of that covenant in the coming of the risen Christ, we pray, "Your
kingdom come." and respond, "Your will be done."
A: Heavenly Father, you have written your law upon the hearts your people in every
time and place. Open our hearts so that this living law produces actions
characterized by grace, love and justice . Your kingdom come. Your will...
A: God of glory, you desire our vows of devotion in the presence of all people, so
that all might come to know your grace. Keep us humble in our proclamation and
mindful of our Lord's obedience in drinking the bitter cup of death, that we may
ever seek your will instead of our own. Your kingdom come. Your will...
A: God of healing, in your kingdom, the sick and dying are relieved of their
suffering. Look with compassion upon __________ , and those whom we name in
our hearts... . Your kingdom come. Your will...
A: God our Father, you recognize with compassion the complexities and insecurities
of adolescence. Be with the youth of this congregation as they live through this
challenging time. Strengthen their faith that they may know you as the true rock
upon which they stand, despite the persecution they may face for their beliefs. Your
kingdom come. Your will...
A: God of mercy, the kingdom of heaven is open to those who become as little
children. We pray for the world's children who are neglected and abused by their
guardians, and ask you to protect these little ones until that day when the violence of
this broken world shall forever cease. Your kingdom come. Your will...
P: We commend our prayers to you, heavenly Father, trusting in the grace and
mercy of your will, and your compassion in hearing the concerns of our hearts. In
Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Good Friday
April 10, 1998
The Lutheran Book of Worship provides for a bidding prayer in the Good Friday
liturgy. The following prayers might be used at another hour in connection with a
Good Friday Eucharist as might be contemplated in emergency pastoral care.
P or A: For our sins, Jesus suffered death on the cross. At the hands of human
beings like ourselves, Christ was tortured and humiliated for his message of love
and peace. With penitent hearts we pray to our God, who alone can transform the
ugliness of our sin into the beauty of eternal life. We pray, "Lord, in your grace,"
and respond, "Forgive us our sins."
A: God of true wealth, we live in a rich nation, and it is difficult to imagine either
the poverty of Jesus or the poverty of many of our neighbours throughout the world.
Yet, from the poorest of the poor, you raised up Jesus to be our teacher and leader.
When our eyes look down upon the poor with arrogance, lift them up so that we
may behold what is truly abundant--your unconditional love. Lord, in your grace.
Forgive...
A: God of compassion, as the soldiers mocked Jesus while gambling for his clothes,
so we confess that we often deride others with humiliating mockery. Free us from
the desire to belittle those whom we do not understand in order to inflate our own
sense of pride. Lord, in your grace. Forgive...
A: God of the Living Word, in the crucifixion of Jesus, the scriptures' proclamations
of the promised Messiah have been fulfilled. Encourage all members of this
congregation to read and listen to your word, which reveals a God of promises kept
and love abundantly given. Make us grateful for this living story into which we
have been invited, knowing that it is told for the sake of our sins and out of your
great love for us. Lord, in your grace. Forgive...
P: This day is full of sadness and shame as we reflect upon the death of Jesus Christ
for our sakes. And yet we can also feel hope, for the cross points to new life as we
wait for resurrection. In the name of Jesus, we offer our prayers to God. Amen.Holy Saturday
Saturday, April 11, 1998
The following prayers might be used in connection with a Holy Saturday Eucharist
as might be contemplated in emergency pastoral care.
A: Anticipating the story of Christ's resurrection and awaiting his coming in this
age, we pray, "Keep us steadfast in faith, and respond, "Come, Lord Jesus."
A: Heavenly Father, we know that to follow Christ is to take up the cross of
suffering. Guide your church with a clear vision of your reign, increase our
commitment to bringing justice to the world, and give us the courage to live and
preach your Word continually. Keep us steadfast in faith, O Lord. Come...
A: God of the nations, the crucifixion of your Son accomplished the liberation of
all people from sin. Where unjust governments rule in wickedness, and where
persecution, violence, and hunger reign, let the power of Christ's death and
resurrection bring just governance and nurturing communities. Keep us steadfast in
faith, O Lord. Come...
A: God of comfort, we pray for those who mourn the death of a loved one. Though
we experience death as a bitter loss, give us hope in the story we re-live today --the
story of the death and victorious resurrection of Jesus. Keep us steadfast in faith, O
Lord. Come...
A: God of healing and new life, we pray for all who are sick and dying, and for the
family and friends who keep vigil with them. Especially do we remember
__________ and those whom we name in the quietness of our hearts... . Comfort
and renew them in their time of suffering. Keep us steadfast in faith, O Lord.
Come...
A: God of life, at this time we are surrounded by images of death. Like Job, we
long to see hope and victory beyond death. Strengthen our will to persevere, even
when life seems dark and empty. Keep us steadfast in faith, O Lord. Come...
P: We keep vigil today, waiting for the ending of the story of Christ's passion,
which we know, by faith, to be a new beginning. Keep us patient in our waiting and
open to your Spirit. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. EASTER SEASON, 1998
Resurrection of Our Lord + Vigil of Easter
April 11/12, 1998
P or A: This night is death defeated! This night has new life triumphed! For God
has raised the Crucified One from the dead. That we might live in the light of
Christ's resurrection, let us pray, saying: "Christ is risen!", and respond, "Christ is
risen indeed!"
A: For the church throughout the world, that we would surrender all that needs to
die for the sake of the gospel, and trust you to bring new life, for Christ is risen!
Christ...
A: For the leaders of the world, that they would be guided in all their undertakings
by a vision of the new creation, and work to bring justice and peace, for Christ is
risen! Christ...
A: For the newly baptized, that they would grow in baptismal grace, dying to sin
and rising to new life throughout their journey of faith, for Christ is risen! Christ...
If Holy Communion is celebrated at the Vigil:
A: For this community of faith, that we would know the new life offered to us in the
gift of Holy Communion, for Christ is risen! Christ...
A: For the sick, the dying, the grieving, and suffering, especially __________ and
those whom we name in our hearts (silence), that the promise of Christ's presence
and the hope of resurrection would bring them peace and strength, for Christ is
risen! Christ...
P: In Holy Baptism we have been joined to the death and resurrection of our Lord
Jesus, and are assured of God's presence with us throughout our lives. Trusting in
your power to make all things whole and new, we commend our prayers to you, our
gracious and victorious Lord. Amen. Resurrection of Our Lord + Easter Day
April 12, 1998
P or A: This day is death defeated! This day has new life triumphed! For God has
raised the Crucified One from the dead. That we might live in the light of Christ's

Easter 2
April 19, 1998
P or A: We celebrate a new creation in Christ's resurrection. With the voices of the
saints of every time and every place we joyfully declare that "Christ is Risen!" and
respond, "Christ is risen indeed!"
A: God of every age, you have transformed your church into a new and holy
creation, charged to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. In its efforts to eliminate
oppression, inspire your church to be a sanctuary for the world, and root all such
efforts in the life-giving story of the risen Lord. Christ is Risen! Christ...
A: God, cornerstone of life, the world often embraces those things that shall pass
away--glamour, excess, and selfish pleasure; it often rejects that which is the basis
for righteous living--community, service, and devotion to you. Inspire the world's
leaders to build policies and construct decisions upon the foundation that is you, that
the world might reflect the just and egalitarian community which is the vision of
Christ's gospel. Christ is Risen! Christ...
A: God of heaven, Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again. Let this
truth be a source of hope and joy for your people rather than one of fear and dread.
Fill us with your call to serve one another as we anticipate your coming, Christ is
Risen! Christ...
A: God of the suffering, be a light to those who are in darkness. We think especially
of the sick and the dying in our own congregation: __________. Let them, with us,
hopefully declare that Christ is Risen! Christ...
A: God of our faith, you come into our lives though we often lock the doors of our
hearts and cover the windows of our minds to you, fearful of your challenging
presence in our comfortable lives. Make us grateful that doors and windows are no
obstacle to you as you boldly break into human lives with your love. Christ is Risen!
Christ...
P: We lift up our prayers to the risen Lord, trusting in his grace and compassion. In
Jesus' name we pray. Amen.Easter 3
April 26, 1998
P or A: The death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ both humbles us and
lifts us up to rejoice in God's love for His people. With great celebration, we pray
"Christ is risen!" and respond "Christ is risen indeed!"
A: God of paradox, you work in mysterious ways, calling those who have
persecuted your people to profess the gospel, and transforming death into the
passage to new life. Open our hearts to your mysterious ways, and grant us wisdom
to discern your will. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of grace, your anger lasts but a moment, and your favor endures a lifetime.
You punish to the third and fourth generation, but grant your blessing to the
thousandth. We humbly thank you for your mercy, and take a moment of silence to
repent of our sinful ways, trusting in your compassion. (silence) Christ is risen!
Christ...
A: God of righteousness, you alone are without sin. You sent your innocent Son to
die for our iniquities. We praise you for the gift of Jesus Christ, in whom we see the
boundless grace and love which draws us to you. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of the weak, you bring comfort and peace to those who suffer. Be with the
sick and the dying, especially those whose names we bring before you now:
__________. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of community, as the risen Jesus appeared to his disciples to break bread
with them, so share yourself with us in the Holy Communion. Prepare our hearts to
meet you in the Eucharist, and encourage us to welcome the stranger to your table,
even as you welcome us. Christ is risen! Christ...
P: With humility and great joy we lift up our prayers to a loving God whose grace
covers all of our sin. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Easter 4
Sunday, May 3, 1998
P or A: We are inspired by your healing and life-giving power as revealed in the
Acts of the Apostles. Help us to live and pray as you would have us, that we, as
the apostles before us, might be your faithful disciples. We joyfully declare "Christ
is risen!" and respond "Christ is risen indeed!"
A: God our shepherd, we live in a world that is often dark, confusing, and fast-paced in the face
of so many technological and economic changes. Lead us beside
still waters, O Lord. Fill us with the comfort and rest that is promised when we
trust in you alone. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of humility, in Jesus you gave us a servant-king and a crucified one as the
bringer of eternal life. May all of our models of leadership-- in governments, in the
workplace, and especially in the church--reflect your way of achieving the good of
all. Inspire our leaders to use their power in efforts to serve rather than to control.
Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of love, we pray for the families of this congregation, that their relationships
be strengthened and deepened by your Spirit. Encourage our families to share their
struggles and hopes, praying and worshiping together, so that our household may be
places in which your presence is always known. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of hope, we pray for those families torn apart by the sickness of a loved one,
that you would enfold them in your comforting arms. Especially do we pray for the
members of this church family who are afflicted by illness. We lift up to you
__________ , and all those whom we name in our hearts... . Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of our lives, your Son has declared " I know my own and my own know
me." May the knowledge that we belong to you inform our every thought and
action. Help us to know you more deeply and to follow your Son more faithfully.
Christ is risen! Christ...
P: We pray in confidence that you, our merciful Father, hear the words of our lips
and the longings of our hearts. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.Easter 5
Sunday, May 10, 1998
P or A: Called through the waters of baptism to be children of God in Christ's new
creation, we joyfully pray "Christ is risen!" and respond "Christ is risen indeed!"
A: Heavenly Father, through the death and resurrection of your Son and by the
power of your Spirit, you have invited people of every race and background to be
one. Let your church be a community of believers undivided by the variety of
appearances and experiences with which we have been blessed. Christ is risen!
Christ...
A: God of creation, you have made a world of beauty and mystery and have called
human beings to be its stewards. Encourage us to care for your world and abandon
wasteful and destructive ways, so that we and all creation might praise your name.
Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of new life, we look to the life of the world to come with hope-- where tears
are wiped away and death is no more. Teach us to share this hope with others in a
way that reflects your grace and love. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of the sick and the dying, we pray that you comfort all who suffer from
illness. We pray especially for __________. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of love, your Son commanded us to love one another as he loved us. May
this congregation be known for its love, both among its members, and as it is shown
to others. Christ is risen! Christ...
P: Into your hands we commend all for which we pray, trusting your promise to hear
our prayers. In Jesus' name. Amen.Easter 6
May 17, 1998
P or A: When Jesus left this world, he promised the gift of the Spirit. We pray
"Christ is risen" and respond joyfully by saying "He is risen indeed".
A: Holy God, pour out your Spirit upon the church that we might be filled with your
life-giving love which leads us to work for justice and peace. Christ is risen!
Christ...
A: God of light, your righteousness shines brightly in a world of darkness. Guide
our young people as they walk through this world. Preserve them from trusting in
empty hopes and promises, and let you Word lead them ever closer to you. Christ is
risen! Christ...
A: God of renewal, inspire the worship of this congregation that we might
experience your presence anew each time we gather. Move musicians to play
joyfully, readers to read your word with faith, preachers to lead us in reflection, and
those who contemplate in silence to do so with quiet vigour. Christ is risen!
Christ...
A: God of faith, bless this congregation with gifts that enable us to serve you --the
ability to teach your Word, the willingness to give of our time and possessions to
those in need, and the desire and ability to pray. In areas where we feel lack, help us
to envision opportunities for growth in faith. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of comfort, be with the sick and the lonely, especially __________ and
those whom we name in our hearts... . Christ is risen! Christ...
P: We pray in confidence that you, our merciful Father, hear the words of our lips
and the longings of our hearts. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.Easter 7
May 24, 1998
P or A: In this Easter season, we celebrate the many gifts which you bestow upon
your people. We also reflect upon the challenging call to live as a new creation in
Christ. Recognizing both the blessing and call to service in Christ's resurrection,
we pray saying "Christ is risen" and respond, "Christ is risen indeed".
A: God of the Church, your apostles were persecuted for the sake of the gospel.
Such suffering continues today in the face of human cruelty and intolerance. We
pray for all who are persecuted for the sake of their faith and political beliefs.
Strengthen the work of organizations such as Amnesty International, which seek to
disclose and put an end to these great injustices. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of righteousness, empower us weak-willed human beings to be faithful to
the promises made in affirming our baptisms: to reject Satan and all his empty
promises. Help us to discern your will from our own selfish desires. Christ is risen!
Christ...
A: God of justice, your Son began his ministry proclaiming the arrival of the
Kingdom of God, in which the blind are given sight and the oppressed released from
bondage. Give us grace to enact the vision of that kingdom, by living lives of service
that are dedicated to justice. Christ is risen! Christ...
A: God of the weak, be with those who suffer and their friends and families who
keep vigil with them. We remember __________ in our prayers. Christ is risen!
Christ...
A: God of all people, it is both a gift and a responsibility to have Christ dwelling in
us. Let us be truly grateful and willing to live as one with the Lord. Christ is risen!
Christ...
P: Hear our prayers, Heavenly Father, considering all things spoken and unspoken.
We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.Pentecost
Sunday May 31, 1998

ourselves to the Spirit of God, that we might live as God would have us. We pray

your Spirit, Lord. Come...
P: Jesus Christ promised his disciples that he would intercede on their behalf when
they prayed in his name. Let the words of our hearts be faithful and sincere as we

pray especially for __________ and for all those whom we name in our hearts. Send
