Renewing Worship

At the turn of the Millennium, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America embarked upon a several-year process with a view to renewing worship in the ELCA and the creation of worship resources to succeed Lutheran Book of Worship. From early days, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada was granted standing in the ELCA's Renewing Worship project. The Canadian dimension of the Renewing Worship project was shepherded by Karen Johnson-Lefsrud [e-mail] of Victoria, British Columbia, and André Lavergne [e-mail] of New Hamburg, Ontario. Now that the Renewing Worship Project has issued in a new constellation of Evangelical Lutheran Worship resources, Ms. Debbie Lou Ludolph [e-mail] of Eden Mills, Ontario, has joined the Canadian coordinating team.

A Few Fast Facts

The rate of adoption for our new worship book is astonishing, especially in the ELCIC. Here are some fast facts, accurate at September 1, 2007:
  1. Evangelical Lutheran Worship is in its 5th printing.
  2. Some 772,000 copies have been ordered in North America (ELCA + ELCIC). That's about 1 copy for every 6-7 ELCA/ELCIC Lutherans combined.
  3. In Canada, 40,000 copies have been spoken for. That's 1 copy for every 4-5 ELCIC Lutherans.
  4. About 300 ELCIC congregations have placed congregational orders representing between 60% and 70% of the ELCIC worshipping community. Many other congregations have ordered copies for the choir or for exploration by congregational leaders.
  5. All ELCIC synods and seminaries have copies as do other church-related institutions.
  6. Many supporting resources are now available for musicians and other worship ministers.

The Road Where Faith Is Found

Borrowed from the poetry of United Church of Canada pastor Sylvia Dunstan (1955-1993), author of Bless Now, O God, the Journey (Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymn 326), The Road Where Faith Is Found is the title of a series of pastoral essays appearing a few each month, beginning December, 2006. The authors include our six ELCIC bishops and a number of ELCIC pastors. The essays are designed to support the introduction of Evangelical Lutheran Worship in the context of a church In Mission for Others The complete Road Where Faith Is Found series of pastoral letters is available on the Worship Matters page.

Retirement Rite

Pastor Eric Dyck, Coordinator of the Eastern Synod's recent Evangelical Lutheran Worship introductory workshops, has crafted a Retirement Rite for the Lutheran Book of Worship.

Worship Workbench

Paul F.

With the conclusion of the field testing and evaluation phase of several years, and with the birth of Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the series of bulletins has taken a new direction.
